Martin Luther King, Jr. was an essential character in the modern era and a central performer in the Civil Rights Movement. His influential lectures and dialogues inspired men and women, young and old, in the United States and all over the world. Not until 1983 was a national holiday created to celebrate Dr. King’s monumental impact and in 1994 Congress designated the MLK Federal Holiday as a national day of service. The MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday that is considered a day of service rather than a “day off.”
